Your iqama is the document that lets you live, bank, drive, schoolyour kids, and travel out and back into Saudi Arabia. Officially the renewal is your sponsor’s responsibility, but every expat should understand the process — because if your sponsor delays, you are the one who feels it. This guide walks through the 2026 renewal flow on Absher and Muqeem, the fee structure, dependent renewals, and what to do when something goes wrong.
When to renew: the 90-day window
Sponsors and dependents can typically initiate renewal up to 90 days before the iqama expires. Cutting it close to the expiry date is the most common mistake — Saudi systems flag late renewals automatically and the late-fee escalator starts the day after expiry. Set a calendar reminder 60 days out and another at 30 days.
Who handles renewal — you or your employer?
Legally, the sponsor (your employer or kafil) is responsible for renewing your iqama and paying the government renewal fee. In practice the process runs through the employer’s Absher Business / Muqeem account. Larger employers do this silently in the background. Smaller ones may ask you to pay the fees up front and reimburse, or may pass the renewal fee on permanently — that is a contractual matter between you and your employer.
The dependents’ fee (the so-called “Maqassah” or family levy) is by law the responsibility of the worker, not the employer. So if your wife and children are on your sponsorship, expect to pay that part yourself.
If your employer is delaying
You have a few options if it is getting close to expiry:
- Send a polite written reminder (WhatsApp, email) referencing your iqama number and expiry date. Keep a copy.
- Escalate to HR or the Government Relations Officer (GRO / Mandoub) directly.
- If still ignored close to expiry, you can lodge a complaint via the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development on hrsd.gov.sa.
- In severe cases (post-expiry, employer refusing), you may be eligible for sponsor-transfer (Naqal Kafala) without the current sponsor’s approval under specific labour-reform rules. A labour lawyer can advise.
Iqama renewal fees in 2026
Several charges combine into the “renewal cost”, and people often mix them up. Here is the breakdown.
| Fee | Who pays | 2026 amount [verify on Absher] |
|---|---|---|
| Iqama renewal fee (per year) | Sponsor | SAR 650 [verify — varies by year of issuance and sector] |
| Work-permit fee (Maktab Amal) | Sponsor | SAR 9,600/year for one-year renewal [verify] |
| Dependent fee (Maqassah) per dependent per month | Worker | SAR 400 per month per dependent [verify current 2026 amount on hrsd.gov.sa] |
| Health insurance renewal | Sponsor (mostly) | Varies by insurer / plan tier |
The exact figures change with most fiscal years and labour-reform announcements, and they vary by sector (private sector vs domestic worker). Always confirm the exact amount on your Absher dashboard before paying — the SADAD bill that gets generated is the authoritative number.
The Absher and Muqeem renewal process
The renewal itself is a five-minute task once health insurance and the SADAD payment are in order. The full sequence:
Step 1: Verify health insurance is active
The Council of Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI) system, “Wasel”, must show an active policy for the worker (and any dependents on iqama). If insurance has lapsed, Absher will not allow renewal. Ask HR for the latest insurance certificate or check on cchi.gov.sa.
Step 2: Pay the iqama fee via SADAD
The sponsor (or you, if your employer asks) pays through SADAD using the iqama bill ID. This can be done from any Saudi bank app — it is a few taps once the bill is generated.
Step 3: Pay the dependent fee (if applicable)
If you have dependents on your iqama, log into your personal Absher account, find the Maqassah bill, and pay via SADAD. The system will not extend dependent iqamas without it.
Step 4: Submit renewal in Muqeem
Once payments clear (usually within an hour) the employer’s GRO submits the renewal in Muqeem (or in Absher Business directly). The new validity date is generated immediately.
Step 5: Confirm on your personal Absher
Log into your individual Absher account and check that the iqama expiry date has moved forward. This is the one step many workers skip — and it is the one that catches sponsor mistakes early.
Renewing dependent iqamas (wife, children)
Dependent renewals piggyback on the worker’s renewal but have their own fee (Maqassah). Practical points:
- The Maqassah is charged per dependent per month — for a family of 4 (wife + 3 kids) it adds up quickly. Budget for it as a monthly cost rather than an annual shock.
- Health insurance must cover each dependent for the full renewal period.
- Children’s school enrolment letters and passport copies are sometimes requested by the system, especially for children turning 18.
- Newborns must be added to your iqama within 90 days of birth and need their own birth certificate, hospital report, and a name registered through the civil-status system.
What happens if your iqama expires
Iqama expiry is treated seriously. The escalator looks roughly like this (verify current amounts on Absher):
- Day 1-3 after expiry: renewal still possible. A late fine of around SAR 500 [verify] is added to the bill.
- Beyond 3 days: the late-fee tier increases. After repeated lapses fines can reach SAR 1,000+ [verify] and the worker may be referred to deportation procedures.
- Travel ban: exit and re-entry visas cannot be issued on an expired iqama. If you leave Saudi Arabia on Final Exit while the iqama is expired, you cannot re-enter without a new visa cycle.
- Banking and government services: bank accounts may be frozen, Tawakkalna app permissions reduced, and traffic services blocked.
Don’t trust your sponsor’s “we’ll do it tomorrow.” Check your iqama validity on Absher yourself, monthly.
Common problems and how to fix them
“Insurance not active” error
Get the current insurance certificate from HR. If the new policy hasn’t been registered with CCHI yet, ask HR or the broker to push the registration. Renewal cannot proceed until Wasel shows it active.
Wrong fee paid
If a SADAD payment was made under the wrong bill, contact your bank to attempt a refund — and meanwhile generate the correct bill and pay it. Refunds typically take 5-15 working days.
Sponsor change during renewal
If a Naqal Kafala (sponsorship transfer) is in progress when your iqama is due, complete the transfer first. The new sponsor will then renew under their own account.
Dependents not extending
Almost always the Maqassah is unpaid, the dependent’s insurance has expired, or the dependent’s passport has less than the required validity. Check all three.
FAQ
Can I renew my iqama myself if my sponsor delays?
Not directly through your personal Absher — the renewal action sits with the sponsor’s account. What you can do is pay your Maqassah independently, escalate to HRSD, or pursue a sponsor transfer in qualifying cases.
What is the difference between iqama and work permit?
The iqama is your residency identity card. The work permit (Rukhsat Amal) is the separate authorisation to be employed. Both are usually renewed together but the fees and bills are distinct on Absher.
Can I leave Saudi Arabia after my iqama expires?
Only on a Final Exit visa, and only after fines are settled. You cannot use an existing exit/re-entry visa once the iqama itself has expired.
Is there a grace period?
There is no formal grace period in 2026. Late renewal triggers a fine from day one; treat the expiry date as hard.
How long does renewal take?
Once health insurance is active and SADAD payment is made, the actual Muqeem submission takes minutes. The new expiry date appears on Absher immediately.
Can I track this on the Absher app?
Yes. Install the official Absher Individuals app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, link it with the Absher Tahaqaq token, and your iqama details, expiry, and dependents are all in one place.
